On a bright spring day early in the
season, Nailsea and District Croquet Club members were treated to a
demonstration, nay master class, of how to run a hoop.
Proper Charlie as he was cutely named spent some considerable time in
the clubhouse just relaxing and chatting to the gathered crowd.
Ultimately the membership could wait no longer and they urged Proper
Charlie to select a suitable mallet from the club's many and varied
selection.
Having selected his "weapon of choice" Proper Charlie strode outside
followed by the excited crowd. Having Ga-Goo'ed his way through many
clubhouse conversations it was time for Proper Charlie to demonstrate
his many skills.

Proper Charlie firstly ensures that the hoop is
suitably firm and is correctly set.

Proper Charlie demonstrates what appears to be
the "Solomon Grip" but the club membership quickly noted the subtle yet
finger tight variation; hence the Proper Charlie grip had arrived.
Proper Charlie stalked the strike ball and carefully took aim.

Proper Charlie carefully re-checked his alignment (club members please
note) and with a final sweep to and fro of his mallet, Proper Charlie
hit the strike ball and "gave it some wellie", as he later described
it; it fairly fizzed through the hoop.
Proper Charlie then stood proud and took the well-deserved applause and
acclaim from a now substantial crowd and promised to return another day
to demonstrate a further skill.
