Nailsea and District Croquet Club hosted one of its annual tournaments for the Michael Poole Cup, a competition for advanced rules Association Croquet for players with handicaps in the range 5 to 12 on 8th And 9th June. Of the 10 entries 5 came from the home club, the others from Bristol, Bath, Blewbery and Nottingham. Rain fell steadily throughout Friday morning, but a window in the weather gave the hard working club members to prepare the lawns for a 9.30 start on the Saturday when the weather was thankfully dry but cool and very windy.
The manager had decided to use the Swiss format, not because he thought it was particularly appropriate but because he could not think of anything better for 10 players over 2 days! The first 3 rounds (of 3 hour matches) were played on Saturday at the end of which Bob Whiffen of Bristol was leading with 3 wins, with Libby Howard-Blood, Kathy Wallace, Brian McCausland and David Hunt (all of Nailsea) chasing on 2 wins. The hoops were (as usual) firm but set on the generous side of 1/16”, but even so only 3 games were won with a peg out, 2 by Kathy Wallace and 1 by David Hunt.
Bob offers Libby a tip.
Play restarted on Sunday in pleasant conditions and Bob continued his winning ways in the morning but in the chasing group only Kathy won. The last round started at 1.30 and an hour later the rain set in and continued until the close of play. Bob and Kathy both won their games, so the trophy went to an undefeated Bob with Kathy as runner up. Kathy also won a token prize for the fastest win as did Mike Salisbury of Bristol for the best win against a lower handicap rated player.
Despite the unseasonal weather everyone was in good spirits to the end and enjoyed each others’ company, Nailsea’s recently levelled lawns and the excellent catering.
Bob Whiffen, delighted with his win.
Mike Tracy, tournament manager.
The event was won by Bob Whiffen of Bristol with Kathy Wallace the runner up.
Many thanks to all who helped in the preparation for and the running of the weekend.

20th April 2019
Our team played its first match away at Bristol. Once again we were without two of our top players. On paper Bristol had a stronger team (handicaps -2, -1, 0, 0, 2) than us (0, 0, 3, 3) so a draw was a good result. After two rounds of doubles the score was 2-2 and each round of singles was tied. James Galpin won all his singles and Ryan Cabble and Graham McCausland each won two singles. Peter Dyke narrowly lost his singles matches. James’ handicap came down to -1 and Graham’s came down to 2 as a result of their singles’ performance.
25th April 2019
Our club sent four players to Sidmouth for its first outing. The croquet club is in a beautiful location on the seafront, however the weather in the morning was horrendous with strong winds and driving rain. Brian Roynon and Libby Howard-Blood played the morning double match and won impressively. Tony Hinchliffe and Terry Young played strong players and both lost by a small margin.
In the afternoon the sun came out and Brian , Libby and Tony had impressive wins, all pegging out. Terry Young struggled against a very experienced player and lost by 5 hoops.
Overall Nailsea won 4 – 3, the first win of the season
7th April 2019
Our team in this top rank division opened its account with a home match against East Dorset at home. Two of the three regular members were unavailable and so Kris Chambers as acting captain led a team with two substitutes from division 2 , Pat Long and Geoff Hughes, drafted in. Geoff and Pat won their doubles game and so contributed to a fine 3 2 win.
Many of us gathered at the club yesterday for the start of the season. A draw of the 100 club was conducted and the prizes were:
1st Tony Griggs, £40
2nd Geoff Hughes, £30
3rd Rob Royffe, £15
The club has had 51 entries and membership is now closed for the year, except for any new members who would like to join in after their beginners lessons.
28th April
Our team in the Central North division played away at Camerton & Peasdown.
The final score was Camerton & Peasdown 13, Nailsea 7
Our GC Level Play team opened its account on Saturday 23rd April by beating Bath 13 1/2 6 1/2
The team consisted of James Galpin, Jim Gregory, Brian McCausland, Pat Long, Geoff Hughes and Andrew Wimshurst.
Short croquet is a faster version of the standard Croquet Association game played on a half-lawn for 14 points.
There were 16 entrants to this annual club competition With a wide range of handicaps, the competition was run in 4 blocks so that everyone had a fair chance to reach the finals which will be played on Club Finals weekend at the end of this season.
Semi-final players were selected from the players with the most wins from each block.
Terry Young, winner of Block A played the winner of Block C, Brian Roynon, and Erica Malaiperuman, winner of Block B, played the winner of Block D, Kathy Wallace.
In two entertaining matches, Erica won hers 14 points to Kathy’s 7. Brian was unable to gain a point in his game, as Terry dominated the game and finished in record time winning by the maximum 14 points.
The final between Erica and Terry will be difficult to predict but hotly contested for who becomes the club 2017 short croquet champion.
The winning team
Nailsea Croquet Club was the venue for the 2017 Spring South West Croquet Federation’s Short Croquet team event.
Teams from all over the South West competed over 2 days 22nd – 23rd April, playing this shortened form of Association Croquet.
The overall winner in Division 1 was Nailsea.
The entrants assembled on Sunday morning
A full entry of 16 players competed this event for the Michael Poole Cup, 6 from the home club and with visitors from Bristol, Cheltenham, Guildford, Cumbria and Edinburgh. The event is for players with handicaps in the range 5 to 12. They were divided into four blocks of four players and on Saturday everybody played a 3 hour game against each of the other players in their block. The lawns were freshly cut on the preceding evening and the hoops firmly set to the correct tolerance. Saturday started overcast, then a cool wind blew up and the evening was sunny and pleasant. In round 1, 3 of the 8 games were completed within the time limit, in the second round none of them did, but then nerves steadied and 5 games in the third round finished with a peg out. The fastest win was by Kathy Wallace in 2 hours exactly. The four block winners were Kathy Wallace (Nailsea), David Hunt (Nailsea), Frances Ransom (Bristol) and Robert Upton (Dyffryn and Nailsea), so this quartet qualified for the semi final stage on Sunday morning. The runners up of each block competed the positions further down the field in a similar arrangement.
The lawns were mowed early on Sunday for the semi final and final stages. The weather was mixed, starting overcast, then drizzle which turned into a downpour in the early afternoon which made all but the most hardy shelter for about 15 minutes and have a brew. The skies then cleared and we finished in brilliant sunshine. The successful semi finalists were Kathy Wallace and Frances Ransom. Kathy had played well from the first game on Saturday and Frances, who has much experience of playing at this standard kept improving after an indifferent start. She gave Kathy few chances and Kathy’s long range shots were not finding their targets as well as they had previously. Frances ran out the winner with a score of 26 – 6, lowering her handicap one step in the process.
Frances carries off the Michael Poole Cup, David Houston won the Moroccan competition (for the greatest improvement in index) before flying back to Edinburgh, Kathy Wallace won a prize for the quickest win (in 2 hours exactly) and Hugh Gallacher won a prize for winning against the largest adverse handicap before driving back to Bournmouth.
The draw was carried out at the Christmas lunch and the lucky prize winners were:
Andrew Wimshurst – £35
Rob Royffe – £25
Libby Howard-Blood – £16
That was the last draw of this 100 club year and the funds raised enabled the purchase of the hand drier in the Gents toilet, the ladies having being equipped last year.
Forms for joining the 100 club next year casino canada will be available shortly on this web site and at the club.
Intermediate North v Swindon
A team of 4 travelled to Swindon and the sun came out to welcome us
In the morning Mike Tracy and Brian Roynon played the doubles Brian make a good start taking his ball around 11 hoops to rover. Mike then took his ball around 7 hoops to give the Nailsea pair a commanding lead. The final score was +7 on time.
Libby Howard- Blood fought hard with her opponent but lost -1 on time.
Terry Young played well and won +12 on time.
In the afternoon Nailsea continued the fight. Libby managed to win despite her 1st ball being pegged out by her opponent. 26-19 to win +7.
Brian also pegged out 26-15 to win +11. Mike peg out win 26-12 to win +14.
Terry battled well to finish ahead by 21-19 to win +2 on time. This gave Nailsea a 6-1 win.
Another great day of Golf Croquet for the club with a real mix of experience and handicaps which saw some surprise results right up until the very end.
But to begin at the beginning. The grey-cloud-covered sky towered over the white-clad-mallet-wielding players as the warmed up, warmup-ridden pairs tossed coins, agreed colours, set timers and sped away from corner 4 to the hoop-bespattered lawns; avoiding hills and hummocks, bugs and blobs, wires, wasps and wondrous wildlife.
Spared screams, screeches, sour words and scenarios by single-banking set-tos, the first round witnessed results as various as +3 to +1t. Shivering sweater-wearing scene two saw similar scales but sunny lunch-snackle-chatter synergized synchronisities resulting in all four round 3 games finishing within time.
Semi-finals were played out in front of an appreciative applause-acknowledging audience and congratulations to Terry and Libby; David Hogg and David Hunt, who will face each other over a best-of-three match at finals weekend.

Nailsea Central South v Weston-Super-Mare at Weston
The match was a close one with Weston running out the winners by a score of 10 1/2 to 9 1/2. The Weston team were predominately high handicap players and Nailsea were not quite able to overcome the extra turns against them in several close encounters.
Twelve players contested the Michael Poole Cup this year, seven from Nailsea and five visitors. The Nailsea representatives were Peter Dyke, Erica Malaiperuman, Brian McCausland, Robert Upton, Kathy Wallace, Brian Roynon and Linda Shaw (the last two playing in their first advanced rules tournament. The visitors were Mike Salisbury, Richard Jackson and Pat Jackson from Bristol, Jeffrey Rushby from Southwick and Brian Shorney from many places including Kington Langley. The conditions were overcast and almost warm on Saturday, then hot and sunny on Sunday. One would have expected the lawns to be quite fast as John Wallace had cut them in both directions on Friday evening, but as a result of the early morning dew, humid atmosphere and the grass growing like a rocket this turned out not to be the case. John came back and did another cut on Sunday morning and the speed went up significantly. The hoops were newly set to an accurate 1/16th” and proved to be challenging, so the referee was called many times to watch hampered shots after a ball had just crept through a hoop with the escape ball in front of the hoop. This goes some way to explain why only five of the thirty games finished inside the 3 hour time limit, Kathy having the fastest win in 1 hour 45 minutes.
The leaders on Saturday evening were Brian M and Erica on 3 wins, followed by Robert Upton, Peter, Jeffrey and Richard on 2 wins. On Sunday morning Brian beat Erica, Robert beat Jeffrey and Richard beat Peter, so going into the final round there were four potential winners. Brian played Robert whilst Erica played Richard. If Robert had won then a tie break would have been needed to decide between Robert and the winner of the other game. Much to the manager’s relief Brian won, achieving five wins out of five games.
Hethus took the Michael Poole Cup home, exactly as he did in 2014, so congratulations to him. There was a tie between Kathy Wallace and Richard Jackson for the so-called Moroccan award (for the best improvement in index by someone other than the Cup winner), so they both got a bottle of wine. Kathy also won a bottle of beer for her fastest win and Brian Roynon also won a bottle of beer for the biggest upset by beating Richard Jackson, their handicaps being 11 and 5 respectively.
Coral Harrison and Liz Tracy did magnificent lunches, Linda celebrated her birthday and a good time was had by all. Brian Shorney congratulated our club for providing an opportunity for players in this handicap range (5 to 12) to play advanced rules croquet and expressed the hope that more clubs would follow suit.
Mike Tracy (tournament manager)
With the luxury of no double banking, lawns set out and fine weather in prospect, it was with a certain level of shock that some pairs learned of the bisques that were to be stacked against them, but play began in good spirit nevertheless.
Round one saw Mary and Pat neck and neck with Brian and Sandra and only half an hour left to play but the ladies used their time wisely and well, finishing the game +6t.
David and Brenda’s partnership provided value for money in the entertainment stakes – they started with their best loss of the day: -1t to Rob and Neil P.
Terry and Doreen monopolised the lawn taking both balls to 3 back but Kathy and James used their last 30 minutes to pull through to a +3t win.
Brigit and Rosemary had a close game against Jim and Tony winning +1t.
An excellent lunch in the sunshine and it was time to think about some supplementary awards for this competition –
We hit the post-prandial doldrums in the second round but entered the third and final round with the semi-finalists far from certain. The thunder-threatening clouds passed over, the heat reached a comfortable level, and all was well with the world.
This seemed to revitalise play – sustained by peripatetic tea and cakes (the waitress that is, not the refreshments) – and it wasn’t until the final games had been played in each block that the positions were clear.

OBE COMPETITION – 17th May 2016
A happy day yet tinged with sadness as the game played for this event “The 10 Shot Game” was introduced to Nailsea Club by our member Ian Telfer and has been adopted as the format for the OBE Trophy. Ian, who sadly passed away earlier this month, had been a competitor for the last two years, having won the trophy on both occasions.
This year we saw two new faces joining us (both youthful OBE’s) Susan and David Pinney from Bristol Croquet Club and along with our own Mary Barnes, Jim Gregory and Terry Young, play started at a very civilised time of 10.30.
Two 50 min. games were played before lunch, the newcomers getting to grips with the two laws incorporated into Association Croquet rules.
After warming bowls of soup and hot rolls another two games were played – Susan and David now understanding the game even better and after a well earned cup of tea and cake the final game took place.
The Nailsea players took the top 3 positions and David was a very close fourth, but Jim was this year’s convincing winner having won all of his 4 games.
As ever there was a grand early turn out to put out the lawns, get the timers ready, put the flag out, get the kettle on, check handicaps, sort out bisques, go through the briefing for players and timekeepers and even get in a few minutes warm up – not bad for a Sunday – and just after 10.00 the first round was in full swing.
A lot of laughter in the warm sunshine as players rushed across lawns (I do mean players, but balls were rushed too), fielded more or less successfully for each other and generally tried not to get in the way but to work as a team.
It was great to see some relative novices play alongside experienced players and to see some excellent partnership work and good spirit in the face of defeat and generosity in victory.
The timekeepers too deserve a special mention – Mike, Mary, Libby and assorted players provided excellent and concentrated support in a task that is more demanding than might be expected.
And thanks to Geoff for checking the clocks before the competition.
This is a light-hearted day’s competition but the basic laws and rules of croquet must not be neglected – we all learned a lot about the importance of keeping our mouths shut when we are itching to say something about a game; and referees were called upon several times as players got caught up in the maelstrom of their games.
After tea we enjoyed the semi finals between Kathy & Brigit v Pat & Neil, and Peter & James v Richard and Violet.
The partnership between Peter Dyke and James Galpin was outstanding in its teamwork and they gained a well-deserved place in the final where they will face Pat Long and Neil Devine.
